What is SERMI?

The automotive
security standard.

SERMI (Security-Related Repair and Maintenance Information) is the European framework that controls access to vehicle security data, including transponder and immobiliser programming, for independent automotive technicians.

It was introduced to prevent criminals from accessing security-sensitive vehicle information. Only vetted, certified technicians may access this data from manufacturers including Volkswagen Group, BMW, Ford, Toyota, and all other major brands.

Without SERMI accreditation, a locksmith cannot legally programme a transponder key for most vehicles built after 2015.

Why it matters to you

Why SERMI matters
to every customer.

Protects you from rogue traders

SERMI certification means we have been vetted, identity-checked and approved by the automotive industry before being granted access to security-sensitive vehicle data. Unaccredited locksmiths cannot access this data legitimately.

Required to programme modern car keys

Since 2021, European automotive manufacturers have restricted access to transponder and immobiliser programming data to SERMI-accredited technicians only. Without SERMI, a locksmith cannot legally programme a key for most modern vehicles.

Proof of identity and clean record

To obtain SERMI accreditation, every technician must pass criminal record checks, identity verification and business registration checks. It is a regulated industry credential, not a simple self-declaration.

Insurance and warranty protection

SERMI accreditation is increasingly required by vehicle insurers and manufacturers. Using an unaccredited locksmith may affect your vehicle warranty and insurance claim validity.

How to verify your locksmith is accredited

Before any key programming work begins, ask your locksmith for their SERMI certificate reference number. A legitimate accredited operator will provide it immediately. Unaccredited operators may not have access to the correct manufacturer security data, which can result in keys that fail or affect your vehicle warranty.
