Why a missing key is still a live key
People assume that losing a key is the end of the story. It is not. Until that key is removed from the car's memory, it will still unlock the doors and still start the engine, whoever is holding it.
If it was dropped in a park, that probably does not matter. If it went missing from a gym locker, a pub table, a workplace or your house during a break in, it matters a great deal. Along with the key, whoever has it may also have your address from the V5C in the glovebox or a delivery label in the boot.
When to have keys deleted
- Keys taken in a burglary, a theft from a coat or a bag snatch
- Keys handed over at a valet, a garage or a car park and never seen again
- Buying a used car that came with one key, when you do not know who else has one
- An ex partner, former employee or former tenant who had a key
- A driver leaving a business that runs a pool car or a van fleet
- Any key that has been missing long enough that you have stopped expecting it back
How deletion works
The car holds a list of key codes it will accept. Deletion means clearing that list and reprogramming only the keys you physically have in front of you. Anything not in your hand at that moment stops working immediately.
- Gather every key you still have. All of them, including the one in the kitchen drawer.
- We verify ownership. Photo ID plus V5C, insurance or finance paperwork. This step is not negotiable for a job like this.
- We clear the stored keys through the immobiliser system.
- We program your current keys back in, plus any new key you want making.
- We test every key and confirm the missing one is dead.

If the car was broken into, mention any damage to the barrel or the door when you call. Forced locks often need repair as well as reprogramming.
Down to one key afterwards
Deleting keys often leaves people with a single working key, which is a fragile place to be. If that one gets lost, you are into a full all keys lost job, which costs more and takes longer.
While the programming session is open and we are already at the car, adding a spare key is inexpensive. Almost everybody who books a deletion has one made at the same time, and it is the right call.

Will my lost key really still start the car?
Yes, until it is deleted from the vehicle's memory. Losing it changes nothing on the car's side.
Do I need every key I own present?
Yes. Deletion clears the stored keys, so any key that is not there to be reprogrammed will stop working.
Can you do this at my house?
Yes, we are fully mobile and most of these jobs happen on a driveway or outside the front door.
Is it cheaper than changing all the locks?
Far cheaper, and more effective. Deletion kills the electronic side, which is what actually starts the car.
How long does it take?
Typically 30 to 90 minutes depending on the vehicle and how many keys are being programmed back in.
What if the car was broken into?
Tell us when you call. Forced barrels and damaged door locks often need repairing as well as reprogramming, and we can do both in one visit.
Will my insurer want proof?
They may ask what you did after the keys went missing. We provide an invoice showing the work and the date.
