The warning signs
Ignitions and door locks fail slowly, which is good news if you act on it. The signs are easy to spot once you know them:
- You have to jiggle or lift the key to get it to turn
- The key goes in but stops partway, or will not come back out
- The steering lock will not release when you turn the key
- A door lock turns but the door does not open, or the button drops on its own
- The barrel feels gritty, or suddenly feels loose and spins too easily
- You have started using the same one door because the others stopped working
Left alone, all of these end the same way: a key snapped in a lock on a morning when you needed to be somewhere. Getting it sorted as a planned job is cheaper than getting it sorted as an emergency.
Repair or replace
Not every stiff lock needs a new barrel. Wafers wear, springs tire and dirt builds up in a lock that has been used twice a day for a decade. Where the mechanism is fundamentally sound, we service it, replace the worn internals and key it back to your existing key, which means you keep the key you already carry.
Where the barrel is beyond saving, we replace it. Wherever the vehicle allows, we key the new barrel to your original key so you are not left carrying one key for the door and another for the ignition.

When it is the key, not the lock
Plenty of people book a barrel replacement when the real problem is a blade worn thin by fifteen years in a pocket. That is why we look at both. If a freshly cut key turns the lock cleanly, you have just saved yourself the cost of a barrel, and we will tell you so.
It works the other way too. A brand new key that jams in a specific door usually means the mechanism in that door is on its way out. Checking both saves a second call-out later, which is the whole point of having a specialist look at it rather than guessing.
Immobilisers, transponders and modern barrels
On anything built in the last twenty five years, the ignition is part of the security system rather than just a switch. Replacing a barrel can mean the transponder ring, the immobiliser and sometimes the ECU all need to agree with each other afterwards.
We carry the programming equipment to finish that on site, so you do not end up with a car that turns over but will not start. If the fault turns out to be electronic rather than mechanical, that is immobiliser programming territory and we can do that in the same visit.
At the roadside, across Leeds
Barrel work is normally seen as garage work. It does not have to be. We carry the tools to do it at the kerbside, on a driveway in Middleton, in a car park in Holbeck or outside a workplace in Seacroft. The car stays where it is, which means no recovery cost and no waiting for a workshop slot.

Winter is the season for this. Moisture gets into a worn barrel, freezes, and a lock that was merely stiff in November becomes immovable in January. If you are already lifting or jiggling the key to make it turn, book it in before the cold arrives rather than after.
Questions about ignition and door lock repair
My key will not turn in the ignition at all. What is wrong?
Most often a worn barrel or a steering lock under load. Try turning the steering wheel gently while turning the key. If that does not free it, stop before the key snaps and call us.
Can you keep my existing key after a barrel replacement?
On most vehicles, yes. We key the new barrel to your original key wherever the vehicle allows, so you carry one key rather than two.
Do I need to take the car to a garage?
No. We do this work at the vehicle, which avoids recovery costs and a workshop wait.
Will the car still start afterwards?
Yes. Where the ignition is tied into the immobiliser we program everything to match before we leave, and we test it properly.
How long does a barrel replacement take?
Typically one to two hours depending on the vehicle, including programming and testing.
The door lock turns but the door stays shut. Is that the lock?
Usually the mechanism or the linkage behind the lock rather than the barrel itself. We can tell which once we are at the car.
Is it cheaper than a main dealer?
Normally, yes, and there is no recovery to pay for and no wait for a booking slot.
